The Last Stand

2010, wow what a year.

This blogging site has helped improve my writing skills and abilty to learn with ICT activities. I have loved being able to come to the computer room and write about the work that we have been doing instead of just having the same old lessons every weak. Seeing as Georgia and Jordie are leaving our class, it will be hard next year to have a class where they arent there, it will be extremly different. I am loosing my closest best friend georgia and my other close friend Jordie. It will be hard and different without them.

My News Program

November 26, 2010 § 1 Comment

Channel One News is a 12 minute news program for teens broadcast via satellite to middle schools and high schools across the United States. Channel One is owned by Alloy Media + Marketing and based in New York City.

  • If I were to run a news program for school I would want it to be exciting and interesting for students to watch.
  • I would want the atmosphere of the program to be causal and chilled but still humorous and fun.
  • I would want the show to be something to look forward to and not a constant nag to be editing and writing articles for it.
  • It would be school based as well as outside school things.
  • There would a filming person, editor, writer and some anchor people to run the show.
  • I would want behind the scenes action
  • I would like to have a broadcasting and editing room

Some of the categories that I would want to include in my news program would be:

  • The contents of the show at the beginning
  • Entertainment – New songs, new movies that are showing (talk about them)
  • Holidays and Birthdays Coming up
  • School events coming up
  • Lunch menu information
  • Sports reports (TRAINING AND GAME TIMES)
  • I would have short clips of the school and what people are doing (sporting games, lunch times and class).
  • A photography section where photo’s of event at the school can be shown on-screen.

An advertisement for a teacher.

Most children and teenagers choose teachers that they can communicate well with and get along well with.

If I were to write an advertisment for a teacher, i would want them to have:

  • a kinda personality who helps when you until you understand them
  • caring and nurturing
  • fun and exciting
  • strict when it comes to the level of uncontrolment
  • very very very minimal amounts of homework
  • creativness in class
  • NO exams
  • Give us treats for working well
  • Ipods allowed in class
  • Allowed to wear jewlery (earings such as second holes and cartilage piercings) (not chunky large jewlery though)
  • Funny, makes class interesting
  • Doesnt do the exactly same thing in every lesson you have.

Come join us at school, be our wonderful teacher 🙂

This is demonstated in the scence of Mary Poppins where Jane and Michael are writing an advertisement for the nanny, but their father is very harsh towards their idea which makes them very disapointed.

These characteristics of a teacher may compare differently to the characteristics of a teacher that our Dads and Moms or their teachers would have chosen when they were at school.

Elitism;

Q: Identify characters and events in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird that highlight the negative consequences of elitist behaviour. In your response you should explain what elitism is and provide specific references to how it is demonstrated in the text.

Elitism is a  belief or shared opinion towards a certain group of people. Another phrase you could use for elitism is a ‘social class’. This term is extended when people who are known as a ‘social elite’, this means they have higher expectations of themselves and believe that they are better than others. A lot of the time they are strongly racist towards others, by doing this they are distinguishing and making themselves noticed as a hierarchy above other groups.

‘Aunty’ Jem spoke up, Atticus says you can choose your friends but you sho’ can’t choose your family an’ they’re still kin to you no matter whether you acknowledge ‘em or not, and it makes you look  right silly when you don’t’.

‘ that’s your father all over again, ‘ said Aunt Alexandra, ‘and i still say that Jean Louise will not invite Walter Cunningham to this house. If he were her double first cousin once removed he would still not be received in this house unless he comes to see Atticus on business. Now that is that.’

‘ But i want to play with Walter Aunty why can’t i?’

She took off her glasses and stared at me. ‘I’ll tell you why,’  she said, ‘because – he – is – trash, that’s why you can’t play with him. I’ll not leave you around him picking up his habits and learning lord – knows – what.’

In this quote Aunt Alexandra has distinguished herself as a higher class, and is making it seem okay to act, talk and think the way she does, when really it is very rude and obnoxious towards others.

Looking Through Anothers Eyes

“you can never really understand someone untill you consider all things from his point of view – until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”

A perspective is Someones elses point of view. Taking a walk or looking though anothers eyes is easier said than done. To look through anothers eyes gives w whole new meaning to a situation. It can make you feel different and relate to how that other person is looking at life. Before blaming someone for something, always try look through their eyes before you judge. The saying, don’t just a book by its cover has a similar meaning of looking though another persons eyes.

In to kill a mockingbird there are many different perspectives, an example is Mrs Dubose. No one really understands about her life and why she is always cranky and bitter to everybody in the neighbourhood. She is always screaming at anyone who walks past her house. Ever since Jem destroyed Mrs. Dubose’s Camelias, he  has to go over to her house every afternoon to keep her company and read to her, He hates this very much. Mrs Dubose acts like she hates it but from the her personality shoes that she may secretly like having him around.

Sexism In to Kill a Mocking-Bird

August 27, 2010 § 1 Comment

Sexism is the Discrimination or abusive behavior towards members of the opposite sex.

In To Kill A Mocking-Bird, sexism is found in the character of Aunt Alexander in chapter 26.

Her views about being a southern lady are very strong in this text. She believes that dressing well, using manners, and being social in a lady like form is right. She insists that Scout should wear dresses, attend tea parties and speak only when spoken to. She insists that Scout should act more lady like. In chapter 24 Scout is dragged into attending a women’s group that Aunt Alexander is hosting. She had to dress in her finest clothes and work very hard to behave properly and in a lady like manner.

“Aunt Alexandra’s deportment involved playing with small stoves, tea sets and wearing  the adda-pearl necklace she gave me when i was born.” – Scout.

The quote above is significant in To Kill a Mockingbird because it shows that Aunt Alexandra believes that women / girls presence should be occupied by playing with small stoves, teapots and dressing up in fancy clothing. Aunt Alexandra most likely thinks that it will help Scout be less of a ‘tom boy’ and help her prepare for what she is meant to be, in her Aunts eyes that is.

Prejudice

August 20, 2010 § 1 Comment

Prejudice is when you are extremely racist about colour, gender and class. This is very rude towards some people. It is wrong to separate people into different classes, as we are all equal in every way. Prejudice often includes dull attitudes, negative feelings , stereotyped beliefs and discrimination towards members of a group.

In To Kill a Mocking Bird, Harper Lee’s characters deal with prejudice full on. There are references referring to black men “niggers” and “boys” which are spread widely throughout the book. Black people occupy the lowest class level of the Maycomb society. White people in the society of Maycomb, hastily and with no problem, reinforce the rigid rules about the different levels of class.

My Attitude Towards Racism

August 13, 2010 § 1 Comment

I am against racism because I think it is very unfair towards people with different colour skin. I lived in a country where there used to be a lot of racism and I learnt a lot about it. In South Africa I learnt about the apartheid – “The social and political policy of racial segregation and discrimination enforced by white minority governments in South Africa from 1948 to 1994″. It was when white people thought they were better than the blacks, and they ruled over them. The government distinguished every part of daily life into a white society and a black society. There were separate park benches, busses, movie theaters, parks and much more to distinguish the whites from the blacks.

This helps me to understand about racism in “To Kill a Mocking-Bird” I have expierienced all the effects that racism has on different people. In the book a Black man was accused of raping a girl. He was fully innocent but no one believed him because he had a different skin colour. I certainly dont agree with the situation in the book. “You are innocent until proven guilty, always”. It should never be, “If you have a different skin colour, you are the guilty one”.

The Pursuit of Goals

“You spend the whole time chasing something and then just as your about to get it, the dream ends.” – Isobelle Carmondy& Steven Woolman, Dreamwalker

When people pursue their goals, it is often something small that they might really want to achieve. With the help of someone else it can often be done with the help of someone else. If you have a goal tht you really want, you should follow through with achieving it. This means to not give up.  After reading the book dreamwalker I soon learned that I should always try my hardest when I want to Achieve a certain goal.

I think People should always persue their dreams, no matter how wild they are. Plus you should always remember that I can be more fun if you share them with another Person.

Dreaming

My dream that I had last night was very strange. It did really have a point,  but not many peoples do. If you dont think about you will never find the true meaning. Alot of the time my dreams are just different expierces. Very small cuts out of my left that come together and make up a wierd storyline. I have never had a dream that was held in Australia, It has only have been in South Africa or some other place. I have my australian friends but the south african scenery.  So, now onto the actual dream. My dream took place at a friends house. Caity’s. it was in south Africa. We were on our way to manly while waiting at the bus stop. Caity, Anna and Paige all had their bikes with them. I drove past and I shouted to my mom in the car that i didnt have my bike with me, and that I forgot it! my mom got really angry and started shouting at the others too. Some how we ended up on a cruise ship. Caity was the only one there with my Dad and Mom. We left my brother behind by mistake because he was studying in his room. So it was unlukcy for him. I know why the ship was in the dream because my familt at teh begining on next year is going on a cruise to vanuatu, which i really excited about. That is probably why it was in the dream. The reason My friends and I were going to manly was because we had actually just gone that weekend for paiges birthday. Thats one of the dreams that i could remember, most of them are very strange and dont have a point.
